E20 Restoration

My very first Elec-Trak (an E20) was a wore out, rusty, cracked frame, limp along, leaky, noisy transaxle machine. The only thing it had going for it was that it was a late model. Several contactors, micro switches, and tires had to replaced to get it semi running. I patched it together and used it to mow for one season. Then, only used it to roto-till my garden.

Starting almost from the original purchase, I begain gathering the needed parts for a ground up re-build. When finally acquiring a nice frame, which was the last main part I needed, the original machine was stripped down and evaluated for components to use in the new machine. Then, got to work.

The new frame had very little rust. Most of which was surface rust. Removed the rust, primed it, and then painted. Used new side panels and rear battery box. Reused the fenders, hood, rear battery box cover, dash tower, steering wheel and column, grill, traction motor, electrical components, and front axle from the old machine.

Sprayed the battery compartments with bed liner, installed new Blazer lights, had the seat cushion re-upholstered, cleaned and painted rims, and mounted new tires.

Acquired a deck shell several years ago which was possibly replaced under warranty. One of the ears that the lift assist springs attach to was missing. You could tell motors and yoke holders had been removed. But, it had seen little use. It had developed some surface rust from being stored in a barn for years.

Removed the surface rust, primed, and then painted. Finally got to use the NOS yokes, casters, lift assist springs, and deck PTO cord I had been saving. :)

Pulled out the three deck motors (one being NOS) which were purchased separately. This was the first time I had laid them out side by side. I was shocked to see they were all different lengths. :shock: Went to plan B. :ugeek: Rebuilt three mid-mount deck motors and mounted them to the shell. Applied bedliner, installed new rear deck rollers, clutch housings, NOS blades, and NOS chute.

Used NOS hood emblems which I had purchased from Harold Z. and installed a set of Cuzpro digital gauges. Turned out pretty sweet.

WOW :shock: If my tractor comes out half that nice, I'm going to have a sweet tractor. ;) That is one beautiful machine. I like the shorty motors on the front deck too. Gives it a sleeker look. Great job.

Quick Question, What is the name of the tires and what size did you use?? They look beefy :D

The tires I used are a Duro brand. The size is 23 x 10.50 x 12. Very similar to these: ... 337c00201f

Looking good Mark you've had that one a while, since 2008?
That mower deck is in really good shape right from the start.
Is that the taller battery box, hard to tell?
We need a thumbs up smiley for this one.

Thanks Doug. I believe it was '08. I mowed in the evenings and at dark so not many people had the privilage of seeing the beautiful red, white, blue, and yellow paint. 8-)

This was the taller replacement box. Personally, like the standard height better.

I got the gauges here: ... 01916.html

The amp gauge is the model A60. The Volt meter is model: V60.

The amp gauge works very well on the E20 with original electronics. It is accurate as checked with a clamp on meter. The volt meter works well when wired to check three individual banks. I never did figure out how to measure additively 12, 24, 36v.

When using these gauges on an electronic upgrade, I am still working out how to eliminate the controller interference. Will pursue this further is the Spring.
