E12 Transaxle leak

E12 Transaxle leak

Postby mbanks850 » Tue Nov 10, 2015 2:10 pm

I noticed the a leak under my E12, after some inspection I found the bottom of the transaxle is wet with oil. Are there any recommendations on how to find the leak and if possible how to repair? Recommended way to get the axle off, fix the leak, etc?

Thanks

Clean it off using simple green and towels. Then cover it in baby or talcum powder. Drive it around.. The leak will be easy to find then.

I think I found the leak... it is coming from between the axle housing and the transmission cover. If you were standing on the side looking down the axle, the leak seems to start at about 2 o'clock. What would it take to repair this leak, or should I not worry and just keep adding oil.

I believe there are o rings in there that seal it. Replacement o rings should be easy to find. Getting the hub off the end of the axle can be a bear - it depends on which type you have. The ones that were loctited on are almost impossible to remove without destroying.
